Elderly Poverty in Selangor: A Growing Concern

Elderly poverty in Selangor has become a growing social issue, highlighting the challenges of aging in a rapidly modernizing society. As Malaysia progresses economically, many older adults, especially those in urbanized and semi-urban parts of Selangor, are left behind without adequate financial support, healthcare, or social services.

A large proportion of elderly individuals in Selangor have limited savings, no formal pension, and rely heavily on informal work or support from family members. However, due to rising living costs, changing family structures, and urban migration, many elderly are increasingly isolated or neglected. With inflation and healthcare expenses mounting, even basic needs like nutritious food, housing, and medical care become difficult to afford.

The root causes of elderly poverty include a lack of retirement planning, insufficient contributions to formal social security schemes, and limited access to education or employment in earlier decades. Many were part of the informal labor market or small-scale agriculture and thus were excluded from pension benefits.

To address elderly poverty in Selangor, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. This includes expanding welfare programs, improving access to affordable healthcare, introducing community-based support systems, and promoting inclusive financial literacy. The state government, NGOs, and private sector must collaborate to create a safety net that protects the dignity and well-being of the elderly population.

Without urgent intervention, elderly poverty in Selangor may continue to worsen, posing both humanitarian and economic challenges for the region’s future.
